The Northern Lakes Fire Department’s 42-year-old Battalion Chief Frank Harwood is one of the firefighters who was shot dead by Wess Roley, Sunday afternoon, June 29, 2025. Firefighter Dave Tysdal, 47, was also seriously hurt in the ambush and has had two surgeries as of Monday midday, according to officials.
What Happened To Frank Harwood
Frank lost his life in the Canfield Mountain ambush while he was responding to a brush fire with 52-year-old John Morrison, the battalion chief with Coeur d’Alene Fire. Authorities investigating the case identified the two courageous individuals on Monday evening, June 30th.
Despite the danger, these guys heeded the call to serve. Investigators later determined that the fire was purposefully set to entice first responders, indicating that the attack was targeted.
Now that the names of the firefighters who perished in this terrible event are out to the public, Kootenai County Fire & Rescue would like to take a minute to remember them and to sincerely thank their community for their love and support.
According to officials, Harwood had been with Northern Lakes for 17 years, while Morrison had been with Coeur d’Alene Fire since 1996.
Both chiefs exemplified the bravery, leadership, and selflessness that characterize the fire department and devoted their lives to serving the public. Unaware of the danger that awaited them, they answered the call without hesitation.
This case is still being investigated; once confirmed, more information will be made public.
