It was revealed early Tuesday afternoon, September 9, 2025, that 29-year-old Japanese thoroughbred racehorse Haru Urara had died of colic. Miyahara Yuko, a representative of Martha Farm, said in the official article of the Japanese magazine Friday Kodansha that Haru Urara had not pooped since yesterday. She believed this to be a terrible indication, and at morning, her condition abruptly worsened and she went away, she said in a mournful voice.

After being given carrots, Haru Urara reportedly regained her vigor and appeared drowsy on August 29th; however it was later determined that she was actually experiencing gastrointestinal issues. And it was determined that the ailment was colic.

Colic is a general term for pain in the abdomen that can come from different abdominal organs but is typically brought on by gastrointestinal problems such as gas, impaction, or twisting of the intestines.

One of the horses in the popular mobile game Uma Musume: Pretty Derby is Haru Urara. The game was first released in Japan in 2021 and then went global on June 26 of this year. Because she hasn’t won since her 1998 debut, Haru Urara is adored by the community and known as “the shining star of losers everywhere.” She keeps running despite her losing streak, and it saw a boom known as “The Haru Urara Boom.” News of Haru Urara spread throughout the world, and even now, players of the gacha game around the world still celebrate it.

From 1998 until 2004, Haru Urara’s career record was 0 wins and 113 losses. But on May 18, 2019, Haru Urara won her maiden race in a modest competition for retired horses, and her heartwarming tale made everyone happy.
