Chandler Jones, a former standout athlete at Bishop Montgomery High School and San Jose State (SJSU), passed away tragically at the age of 33 after being hit by a car on a freeway in Los Angeles early on Sunday morning, June 22, 2025.
Around two in the morning, Jones was struck by a Toyota RAV4 on the Marina Freeway, resulting in his death.
Danny Maciocia, general manager of Montreal, made the announcement early on Tuesday.
The records for the longest kickoff return (97 yards) and greatest fumble recovery (98 yards) are held by Jones, a former star of the Canadian Football League. Jones played for the Browns, Colts, Buccaneers, and Montreal Alouettes (CFL) before turning pro after attending San Jose State University. Later, he worked as a coach with the Montreal Alouettes, College of Idaho, and San Jose State.
After playing in the National Football League, Jones made his way to the CFL. Prior to entering the coaching profession, he was a member of the Montreal Alouettes. Jones helped the Alouettes win the Grey Cup, Canada’s Super Bowl, in his first season as assistant defensive backs coach in 2023 and 2024.
At the collegiate level, he was a coach for San Jose State and the College of Idaho.
The vehicle accident is still being investigated. As soon as officials confirm any new information, it will be made public.
