On Sunday, August 31, 2025, a three-vehicle collision in the parkway’s westbound lanes close to the Straight Path exits claimed the life of active firefighter Joseph “Joe” Herman of Ladder Company 111, 36, of Amityville.
It’s a devastating loss for everyone who knew him, and the people of Long Island are in shock. His daughter Lacy Leigh Herman, who will turn two soon, is left behind.
Herman left a lasting legacy of bravery, service, and compassion that impacted many lives and earned him recognition as a hero both on and off duty. In addition to his work as a firefighter, Joe was well-known for being kind and giving, making everyone around him laugh and smile. Family, friends, and coworkers who loved him will never forget his unflinching spirit and commitment to helping others.

Visitation hours are precisely 12:00–2:00 and 4:00–9:00 p.m. on Friday, September 5, 2025 at the Charles G. Schmitt Funeral Home, 3863 Merrick Road, Seaford, New York.
The Mass of Christian Burial will take place at the St. William the Abbot Church, 2000 Jackson Avenue, Seaford, New York, on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at precisely 10:45 a.m.
Pinelawn Memorial Park Cemetery, 2030 Wellwood Ave., Farmingdale, NY 11735, will be the site of the immediate burial.
