The public learned that 21-year-old Demartravion “Trey” Reed, a student at Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi, was discovered hanging from a tree with a rope around the neck close to the school pickleball courts early on Monday afternoon, September 15, 2025. Authorities suspect suicide but found no evidence of foul play.
Autopsy results are still awaited. Officials have not verified social media reports of other injuries, such as fractured bones. Since there is no proof of homicide, neither individuals nor organizations have taken responsibility.
An investigation is ongoing by multiple agencies.
“Delta State’s University Police Chief Mike Peeler said officers discovered Reed around 7 a.m. Peeler said he does not suspect foul play in Reed’s death and that Reed’s body has been retrieved by the Bolivar County Coroner’s Office and that an autopsy will be conducted”
“What was to be a celebration of Delta State University’s centennial has turned into a day of racial tension, speculations and rumors after a Black student was found dead this morning in the center of campus in a tree.”
As the college community mourns the loss, counseling services are being provided and all courses and centennial festivities were canceled. Authorities affirmed that the campus is still secure.
